Asst. Prof Johnny Ong

National Cancer Centre Singapore

Dr Johnny Ong is a Consultant in the Department of Surgical Oncology in the National Cancer Centre, Singapore. Upon graduating from NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 2004, he became a medical officer at SGH and went on to serve in the Singapore Armed Forces. He was awarded the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2008. 

Spurred on by his interest in scientific research, he pursued a Ph.D. in the Department of Oncology at the University of Cambridge, UK from 2009 to 2013. This was funded by the NRF-MOH research scholarship. During this period, he has published in many high impact factor journals including Journal of Clinical Oncology (JIF 18) and Journal of National Cancer Institute (JIF 11). His current work focuses on the study of genomics and transcriptomics in disseminated cancer cells to understand cancer metastasis. The aim is to identify novel mutations and biomarkers that could serve as diagnostic or prognostic markers of disease as well as to identify novel therapeutic strategies. Apart from his research involvement, he plays an active role in medical education and mentoring young aspiring scientists. He has recently obtained his FRCS specialist accreditation and will continue to work towards his goal as a clinician-scientist.
